This is amazing. Epic. I'm going to run out of Frances Hardinge books to read soon and then I'm going to weep for days.

I can't even sum this book up for you. It's... wow.

It takes me a little while to get oriented in one of her books, but it is worth it. I get lost a few times along the way (her mysteries are generally super awesome), but again, so totally worth it.

The heroine in this one is young (12) and every once in a while you're like, "Really? Twelve?" Because she's so grown up and smart but I think Hardinge does a very good job of painting out her character and staying true to her tribe roots, and the kind of life she's lead. Yes, she does and thinks up amazing things. She also makes an incredibly excellent role model for young girls.

Read it. That's all I can muster as I must now go buy the next book of Hardinge's I can find.

Exhilarating, Harrowing, Astonishing . . . Those are only a few of the appropriate adjectives for Francis Hardinge's latest novel, "Gullstruck Island." I can only think no one else has written a review yet because it seems presumptuous to comment on such an achievement. The characters--quiet, determined Hathin; the irresponsible seer Arilou; the Superior, buried beneath the weight of his ancestry; sly Jimboly; monumental Dance; and many, many others--stay in one's mind after reading. The themes--from the way we respond to overwhelming loss and the pitfalls of intercultural communication to scapegoating and the nature of attraction--are innumerable and interlinking, and the plot shows some facets easily while surprising with others. One wants to linger in reading in the knowledge that it will be a long time before another novel of this calibre is encountered, but dash through to alleviate the almost overwhelming suspense. But it is the beauty of the prose that is most noticeable. Emily Dickinson wrote something like, "If I feel that the top of my head is taken off, I know that is poetry," and there are more moments of that sheer, hair-raising astonishment at the deadly perfection of a turn of phrase and thought in this novel than any other in recent years. Many novels, including Hardinge's first, "Fly By Night," deserve 5 stars, but this is one of the rarities that is in an entirely different category altogether, requiring six or more stars. I only wish my review could capture some of the beauty and terror that fills this work.
Foolishly, when I was around 17 years old, I mused out loud to my friend, "I don't know why it's so difficult to be a successful artist. All you have to do is create something entirely new."

Entirely new. I said this like it was as simple as tying a shoe or picking a flower. Of course, it's not that simple; it's immensely difficult to be original. Just ask Nicholas Sparks and every Tom Cruise movie ever. Hey, even ask Shakespeare!

But in Gullstruck Island (also published under the title The Lost Conspiracy in the US), Hardinge fulfills my age 17 requirements for membership to the successful artist club because the story, characters, and world she creates are familiar but ultimately unlike anything I've ever read before. Gullstruck Island is a place where volcanoes fall in love; where certain people can detach their five senses from their bodies in order to witness events on the north of the island with their eyes while hearing a whisper on the south of the island with their ears; where individuals love their ancestors so much, they'll gladly sacrifice arable land to expansive tombs instead. It's also a place suffering from the effects of colonialism, a place full of internment camps for hated and distrusted tribes, a place where mass murder of a disliked tribe is acceptable. This wonderful, dark island becomes a breathing landmass with Hardinge's fantastical prose.

When people talk in clichés about reading, they often say something like, "I read because it allows me to explore other worlds." I agree with this statement, but Gullstruck Island reminded me that those worlds need not reflect our own. It reminded me that, in fact, it is better to escape to a world completely zany, entirely backwards, and not quite sane.

To accompany Frances Hardinge on more of her imaginative acid trips, I will be picking up her backlist shortly. She seems like the perfect author for a reader desiring beautiful prose, wacky plots, strong heroines, and original settings.
Amazing world, amazing characters, fabulous read. This going onto the "read once a year" list. Is great to see a bit of New Zealand in the story, too.
Praise for Frances Hardinge. This book is a master piece. Enthralling plot, fabulous and believable characters, convincing book-world logic and the unique setting provided a deeply enjoyable reading experience. I have revisited the book often.
Many reviews here will do a better job of describing the merits of this book, but if you are a longtime Hardinge fan like myself, this was one more book of hers that left me breathless with delight--couldn't put it down!
Gullstruck Island is one of the best books I've read in a long time, and I'm amazed to find this quality of writing in YA. Where so many young adult books have fallen into shallow world-building, flat characters, and romance-driven plots, Hardinge tells a full, unique story. With beautiful prose she weaves a unique world that incorporates elements of fantasy without a single magic cliche. Not to mention that the heroine is actually intelligent! I was drawn in by the characters from page 1 through page 500 (which is saying something!)

I've already begun to recommend this book to anyone who will listen. It has more than enough depth and character development for an adult reader. And, even though the unabridged version may be daunting in length, I like to believe this is the kind of book that can get a kid reading.

Next to Incarceron, this is one of the best new YA fantasy novels I've found in years.
