Obsessive, possessive, and destructive. These are the first words that came to mind when I started reading Shades of Obsession. The main character Alexander is honest to the point of being vulgar. You want to hate him but how can you hate a hot billionaire with a desire to devour you? He is obsessed the moment he meets Elena and manages to hold out until he deems her old enough. That is a quality I find appealing because Elena would never have survived his passion if he had taken her earlier in her life. He allows her the time to grow never thinking she would be able to resist him.
Let the games begin. Elena is attracted to him but in another relationship when she meets Alex. She is intimidated by his power and fighting her own desire and attraction for him while desperately trying to hold on to her independence. I loved that each character has family that they love and friends who always are supportive of each other. We are introduced to exotic locations and the world of big business. The story is never boring and the sex is always hot. This was an addictive read. I highly recommend it!

I expected reading something like FSOG, since the "dumb" review mentioned it's the same. It is not the same. The hero is no sex addict, he's obsessed with one person,waiting for her. On the said "brands", there's a disclaimer for them and the settings, just like there's a disclaimer for the rape and kidnapping. I really am not sure if that person even read the book. Anyway, all I can say is that it's a bit too dark at times. I really ended up enjoying the story. Well-crafted and definitely well-written. No repeating, no errors, etc, which is common in these types of books. I recommend this to people who enjoy edgy romantic thrillers.
Wasn't sure what I was getting into when I started this book. I loved the sarcasm right away. For awhile I even had to put the book down and take a break, but once I started reading again I couldn't stop. I was just as obsessed as the character! This book is great for anyone that's looking for something different and dark. The sex is never dull to say the least. Can't wait to read the next book.
I liked that I got a lot of material in one book. I liked the characters. In the beginning, I felt a little lost following the story. My patience was growing thin waiting for the characters to meeting each other's. 200 pages too long. From the writers perspective, I get it. The levels of obsession were clearly known to the reader. Dark romance, lust. Lies, desire, money are clearly shades of obsession. 4.5 stars in my opinion.
The first half of this book was written in beautiful prose but often left the reader wondering -where are we going with this and why is it taking so long to get going? Once it started moving in the right direction it was quite interesting. Definitely not one for a quick read or instant gratification though. I truly have mixed feelings about going on to the next installment.
I must admit I read the second book before I read this one and then continued to read the second one again. This was a compelling, gripping, gritty dark romance that had me loving and hating at some points. It still seemed like some parts were missing and maybe that's because things will be wrapped up in the third book. Elena had me rooting for her in some parts and other parts I wanted to slap some sense into her for giving into Alex mean streaks. Alex could be so wonderful and caring at times that it was hard to believe the sadistic part of his life. My emotions were all over the place. At one point I had to stop reading and get a grip. That shower scene and the scene after the masquerade ball was off the charts. Now I'm frustrated because I have to wait for the 3rd book to find out if Alex redeems himself. The author's writing was superb but a little less brand name droppings and names of food had me totally frustrated. I'm sure most readers would agree with me on this point. Still I gave it 5 stars because it was truly an excellent book.
TO READ OR NOT TO READ...
Ok.. I am sitting on the fence with this one. First of all, if you have issues with kinky sex, rape discussion or kidnapping, please steer clear of this book. It will, at the very least, make you extremely uncomfortable. If you are amenable to these things, read on.

THE RUNDOWN
This book is written mostly from the viewpoint of Alex Turner; an educated, business tycoon, that has never eaten off anything less than the finest silver. (The word meglomaniac is a staggering understatement for Alex Turner.) Mr. Turner has become obsessed with Elena Anderson (secondary viewpoint) and wants nothing more than to hurt and control her. After following Elena's every move from a distance, his compulsion reaches a boiling point after a chance meeting in public. What will Alex do for (or to) her when he finally gets his hands on her???

MY TWO CENTS
My favorite part of the book, from the beginning, was the general snark/condescending tone of Alex Turner. Ironically, by the end of the book, my LEAST favorite part ended up being Alex's snark and condescension. I know what you're thinking... MAKE SOME SENSE WOMAN!!! Well, you will just have to read it and then you might understand what I'm saying.

In the beginning, the wit and cynicism piqued my interest but by less than halfway through, I found the detailed descriptions and narrative to be excessive to the point of monotony. What did seem like a naturally embellished narration style quickly began to feel forced, reaching at best.

I did find the interactions between Alex and Elena to be entertaining. Also, I think that the way things were described between Alex and his various conquests was very enjoyable and especially rang true and made him very real to me. I felt like through those parts, I came to understand him a little better.

Without spoilers, I can't go into the last half of the book, but I will say that I struggled to finish this one. I thought it was fairly predictable and kind of like I saw the ending within the first few chapters. It was a long read for me. However, I did enjoy the depth and effort that the author gave us and I am definitely a fan of the writing style. Just because this one wasn't a home run for me, I wouldn't want to miss out on reading another by JR King.
