I have no idea what I just read. Obscure fiction works for me often, but this was just too much. I couldn’t wait for it to end and I’m so glad to be done with it that I can’t even be bothered to write a full review. The writing itself is fine and I'm fully aware that it is an "Objectively Good Book," but I hated the experience of reading it so much. It was a lot different than what I expected.

Less of a fun read, more of a slog through a over-eager English professors idea of great verse. It has take taken me two weeks to read the last 20 pages.
I love magic & fantasy. This fills the bill.
Like old fairy tales which were not necessarily happy tales, this book is filled with a sense of dread. Nothing is made completely clear and you get to make your own decisions. Very interesting well-written book.
As a folklore enthusiast, this hits all the marks. The voice, the style, the attempt at moral balance and what defines light and dark. It is all here in this little volume.
This is one of those books where I can tell the writing and story are of the highest caliber and quality, but it failed to capture me.
I couldn't put this book down. The writing was magnificent; the prose was lovely. The whole book was lyrical and strange. I loved that the narrator's voice grew more complex as the story went on. This was like The Hike, but colonial & about women. If you love strange journeys and secrets and the unexplained, and a story that unfolds without spoon-feeding you all the answers, you'll love this.
I was excited for this to be released, but I did not particularly enjoy this book. While well written (and written like a fairy tale), I didn’t find it particularly engaging nor did I find the characters particularly easy to connect with. While reviews and descriptions made it seem compelling and perfect for the season, I didn’t find it to be the case. Truth be told, I stopped reading halfway through because there are many other books out there.
