Burn A Novel Linda Howard 9780345486561 Books

To date, this is the worst Linda Howard book I've read. I am a huge LH fan, so I was extremely disappointed in this. The first problem is that the entirety of part 1 is dedicated to Jenner's life pre-lottery and immediately thereafter. This was totally unnecessary and added nothing to the substance of the book. In fact, this story would have been much better off (and probably more enjoyable to read), had the salient parts of Jenner's backstory been delivered in small chunks within the current narrative. We didn't need the first quarter of the book to provide us with a detailed description of her life as a poor person or to understand how people treated her after she won the lottery. It was a total waste of time.

The second problem is that there is absolutely no mystery or suspense here to capture or hold the readers' interest. We know, from the outset, that Cael is one of the good guys (though we don't know exactly what government agency he's affiliated with). Still, there is nothing much left to the imagination or to try to figure out. Knowing that he isn't a bad guy just completely takes away any element of suspense there might have been because there isn't any coming from any other direction.

The third problem is the total lack of chemistry between Jenner and Cael. In addition, there are deficiencies in the development of each of their characters, which simply adds to this problem. I didn't like Jenner at all. I liked Cael okay, but I wasn't drawn into the story enough to care about what happened to either of them. It was ho-hum all the way through. It's pretty sad when a double kidnapping and a psychotic on the loose fail to incite any interest in a story.

Burn A Novel Linda Howard 9780345486561 Books Reviews

Ms. Howard gives you the expected high-level suspense and made you question who the good guys were and who the bad guys were. The romance took a second seat to the suspense story, but still all good.
REVIEWER’S OPINION
Great character development for Jenner. She didn’t have an advanced education, but I loved her intuitive smartness which guided her actions and helped her make smart decisions about a number of things. Great plot development. Great emotional pull. Romantically there’s anticipation and clever dialogue. I was laughing and chuckling many times – sometimes at the clever banter, other times because I was surprised at something unexpected happening. The suspense is well done. At the end, on the last page, I felt great! I read the physical book a few years ago and recently did the audiobook.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ABOUT OTHER REVIEWS
A couple of reviewers felt there wasn’t enough romance. I agree that there was not a lot of romance, but there was definitely enough to be able to call this a romance novel. It was a good story which too many romance novels don’t achieve. Someone did not like that there was no secret about what was going to happen to the ship and its occupants. I didn’t mind that. The mystery was “how and when” the good guys would discover the problem and “what” they would do about it. A lot of good stories work this way. Someone complained that the “elaborate kidnap scheme seemed contrived.” I had no problem with it. In fact, one of the reasons I liked this book was that the kidnap scheme was believable, at least to me. One reviewer wanted more character development concerning Cael and the bad guy. Ok, there could have been more, but I was fine without it. I didn’t notice the lack of it until I read that reviewer’s opinion.

STORY BRIEF
Jenner is a blue collar worker who wins a $295 million lottery. She is street smart from watching her father who was a con man. I think her mother died early. Jenner saw her best friend and coworkers change after she won the lottery. They were jealous and resented her. Jenner moves to Palm Beach and becomes a close friend with Syd, a shy kind-hearted heiress. Syd invites Jenner on a luxury liner charity cruise for two weeks. Aboard the ship, Jenner is taken hostage by a stranger and must cooperate in a mysterious cloak-and-dagger scheme, which involves pretending to be his lover.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR
I’ve enjoyed the narrator Joyce Bean in some books but not all books. She has a problem doing men. She sounds weird or loses emotion when she tries to lower her voice to do men. She had the same problem in two other audiobooks Blue Smoke and Angels Fall by Nora Roberts. In this book her voice for Cael (romantic hero) was wooden with no emotional interpretation.

DATA
Narrative mode 3rd person. Story length 365 pages. Swearing language strong. Sexual language moderate. Number of sex scenes 3. Total number of sex scene pages 5. Setting 7 years earlier Chicago, IL and current day Palm Beach, Fl, San Diego, CA, Hawaii and aboard the Silver Mist luxury liner in the Pacific. Copyright 2009. Genre contemporary romantic suspense.
This is romantic suspense, but there is not that much suspense. The pleasure comes from two tough individuals butting heads with snarky dialog and sexual sizzle. The plot is simple and there is no need to worry about spoilers, because the bad guy, his goal and his reason for it are clear practically from the beginning. Cael Traylor is a super-hero he's gorgeous, speaks lots of languages (including "Southern"), has limitless martial skills, and was trained by no less than Mossad. Nowadays, he and his team - all of whom are unusually good-looking, smart, well-heeled and fun to be around - take assignments in surveillance. Jenner Redwine is a former blue-collar worker who won one of the biggest lotteries anywhere and is now rich enough to buy a small country, but she hasn't found a place where she seems to fit. Jenner gets in Cael's way, literally - his team was supposed to be in her stateroom on a cruise, but the paranoid bad guy arranges a swap at the last minute. Cael solves this in true Romanceland style her friend is kidnapped onshore, and Cael kidnaps her on the cruise. She must pretend to be in love, giving him an excuse to be in her stateroom, and there are endless situations that develop, including the feisty heroine handcuffed to the muscular hero all night. Jenner is smart enough to figure out most of what is going on, so once again, suspense, fear and threats don't last long. The fun - while it lasts - is all about the cruise, Cael's efforts to control the uncontrollable Jenner. I really enjoy this book because of the interplay of the hero and heroine; everything else is just a backdrop for this.
Stockholm syndrome with a twist! A little slow to get going, but a great finish! The premise that the end justifies the means is what I found distasteful, and the end was not as HEA as most of her books, but still a good read
